Many bowls clubs are putting a lot of effort into recruiting younger players to their clubs, and some innovative ideas have been produced, including Barefoot Bowls.
Well, Nutana Lawn Bowling Club in Saskatoon, Canada have taken the idea of ‘cool’ to new heights…
The club has been going since 1938 and a decline in membership to less than 50 has resulted in an unusual marketing drive by club memeber Alex Scott.
Alex has competed in bowls tournaments in Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, the United States and all over Canada. Alex and teammates Grant Wilkie and Keith Roney won the Canadian Men’s Triples event last year.
Alex is also an avid free style rapper and came up with this unique approach to marketing the club to younger members. The video features Alex, together with Grant Wilkie and various other club members in a hip-hop video promoting the Nutana Lawn Bowling Club.
Alex, who is 29, and has been bowling since he was 10 says “Once you get to a competitive level, you’d be surprised how many 25- to 35-year-olds are there basically bowling and kind of hauling ass,” He adds “The social aspect of it is unbelievable, I’ve travelled all over the world and all over the country, just meeting similar-aged people who are all there to do the same thing.”
Well we hope it works for Nutana, and we look forward to seeing all your hip-hop videos…
